Moosalamoo National Recreation Area:
Something for Everyone in Every Season
Enjoy a hike along the Long Trail, or from Lake Dunmore up to Rattlesnake Cliffs. Walk among the wild blueberries on Hogback with spectacular panoramic mountain views. Stroll around the beautiful Robert Frost Trail, reading some of his poems and feeling the inspiration of this place he loved.
Camp at Branbury Beach State Park on the shores of Lake Dunmore, at a rustic campsite at Silver Lake, or the Green Mountain National Forest’s Moosalamoo Campground at the base of Mount Moosalamoo. Or plan your stay at one of the many country inns in and near the National Recreation Area. Winter brings its own delights to Moosalamoo – where the snowfall is plentiful. Cross-country ski on miles of groomed trails through the National Recreation Area beginning at Blueberry Hill Inn or Rikert Ski Touring Centers, or visit Middlebury College’s Snowbowl alpine ski area. Snowshoeing and snowmobiling opportunities are numerous.
In the spring thousands of woodland wildflowers carpet the forest floor. Later in the season purple asters, goldenrod and ripening grasses precede the spectacular autumn foliage display.
The large contiguous habitat is home to numerous animals, large and small, from moose to bobcat, and from bear to weasel. The birds of Moosalamoo include many hawks, riding the thermals of the Green Mountains, and Peregrine Falcons that nest on the Mount Horrid cliffs and Rattlesnake Cliff.
