Moosalamoo (pronounced moose-ah-la-moo) is derived from the Abenaki word “Mozalômo” meaning “moose call, song or sound”

Area Info

The Moosalamoo NRA can be accessed by the gateway communities of Brandon, Middlebury and Rochester, Vermont and is an easy half-day drive from Albany, Boston, Hartford, Montreal, and New York City. 

Trails can be accessed from several locations. Popular trailheads include:

  • Falls of Lana/Silver Lake off VT Route 53 in Salisbury near Lake Dunmore and Branbury State Park
  • Silver Lake via Goshen Trail from Forest Road (FR) 27 in Goshen
  • Oak Ridge Trail off VT Route 125, East Middlebury
  • Moosalamoo and North Branch Trails near Moosalamoo Campground from FR 24 in Goshen
  • Minnie Baker Trail off VT Route 53 in Leicester
  • Leicester Hollow Trail via Fay Road (FR 40) in Goshen

Getting Here

By Air

  • The nearest airport is Rutland, about a 40-minute drive. There are three flights daily to/from Rutland (RUT) and Boston's Logan Airport (BOS) via Cape Air.  Flight time is less than an hour.  
  • Burlington International Airport (BTV) is served by several national and regional carriers. Burlington is about a 75-minute drive from Brandon. 
  • Rental cars are available at both airports.

By Train

  • The nearest train station is in Rutland which is served by Amtrak's Ethan Allen Express, originating from New York City. The journey takes about five and a half hours. Check with Amtrak for schedules and ticket prices. 
  • Amtrak service will extend to Middlebury, Vergennes and Burlington in either 2021 or 2022.
